Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, better known as BPPV, can literally stop you in your tracks. Make sure you are properly diagnosed because the symptoms can be something more serious and dangerous if not properly diagnosed.

The first exercises are called Brandt-Daroff exercises. Start in an upright, seated position. Then move into a lying position on one side with your nose pointed up at about a 45-degree angle. Stay in this position for about 30 seconds (or until the vertigo subsides, whichever is longer). Then move back to the seated position and stay for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side. This should be done 5 times, 2 times a day holding each position for 30 seconds.

The next set of exercises are called Gaze Stabilization exercises. Keeping your head in one spot, move your eyes side to side as smoothly as you can 10 times. Then move them up and down 10 times. Next move them at a diagonal 10 times one way, and then 10 times the other way. You might get some symptoms while doing this, but if you can keep moving them, the symptoms should go away.

Finally, you are going to move your head, but keep your eyes focused on one spot. Hold out your finger in front of you, or put an X or A, or any letter on a piece of paper on the wall. While focusing on the one spot, move your head side to side as smoothly as you can 10 times. Then move it up and down 10 times. Next move it at a diagonal 10 times one way, and then 10 times the other way.

  2. This kinda helped my dad. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work

    1. +Laila Sergio I would try these exercises and see if they help. Good luck.

  3. Hi dr. I have migraine and also i feel dizziness at the same time only from the right side of my head…i visit many doctors but they just give me medicine nothing work

    1. +Barbara Mazzocca They aren’t specifically for it, but some have said it does help. So I think it is probably worth a try, but it might increase the dizziness before it helps. Good luck.

  4. I was dx with virtigo in 2013. Then it advanced to menieres disease. I need to find out about exercise therapy to regain my balance. I have to walk with a cane. Please help. But i have changed my diet and havent had any dizzy spells but i still get the ocean sound in my right ear.

  5. hello

i feel like its hard to keep my head up and i if force him up then i got realy dizzi untill i feel nausea
i start doing the vertigo exercises but i dont know if there is a point doing that becouse maby its something else then vertigo
i got realy dizzi and nausea when i did the vertigo exercises
i love to hear your Opinion and what i should do becouse it got effects on me few times a day sometimes all day long
    Thank you Doctor

    1. +lior fridman Sometimes the exercises do make you feel worse before you feel better, but vertigo can be the symptom of many things. I would really recommend going to see your doctor or a PT who specializes in vestibular rehab. They can do some simple tests by just watching your eyes with certain movements to help you figure out what it is. Good luck.

  6. Thank you so much. I’ve been dealing with this for a few years now and always gone back to my ENT hearing him say ‘if this continues I’ll teach you the exercises!’ Why not there and then teach me! Thank you for this video. I will try the exercises and keep looking on youtube for others like I remember him making me move for the Ethlene? Manoever… I really hope this works. 🙂

    1. +Cary Lee There is a lot of research now that shows a relation between Vit B12 deficiency and balance issues, so it is definitely possible.

    2. +AskDoctorJo yes the Eply Maneuver. I found something on Vit B12 helping too…have you found this at all in your practice?

  7. Ive been starring to get dizzy/vertigo while driving now. and quite frankly its very very frustrating and very scary! any help out there from anyone? im now afraid to drive and have anxiety daily – i was once that person that drove every where and far away for long getaways now i just stay close to home 🙁

    1. +GLENN FISHER Thanks, and you’re welcome! I hope they help. Lots of people get a good giggle with the disclaimer alert 🙂

    2. +AskDoctorJo thank you very much. I love your energy and I’m so glad I found your videos – I tried the eye and neck moves – just need to do the couch ones. I will do theses daily. Thank you for posting this. I did a Google search today and you were the first one that popped up (and I giggled with your disclaimer) the way u said it hahahha – thank U again sweet heart 😊😊

    3. +GLENN FISHER Sorry to hear you are not getting many answers. Have you tried these exercises yet? If you haven’t, I would give them a try and see if they help, but they might make you feel really dizzy at first. Good luck.

    4. +AskDoctorJo I’ve been to an ENT they did nothing. I saw a neurologist who did nothing. I’ tried an MRI but co pay too much money $500 (sorry I’m not rich) now I’m trying to get blood work done to see if any zinc levels or vitamin levels are low.

  8. I don’t recall anyone calling it that and its not on my medical paperwork

    1. when I the exercise you did on the couch with the 45 degree angle it helped a year for the dizziness but not for the floor moving under my feet.

    2. +D J Okay, then this probably won’t help, but some general neck stretches might.

  9. Thank you so much for posting these exercises I’ve been suffering with vertigo since 2012 and it’s a terrible feeling.

  10. I believe my vertigo is connected with my cervical spondylosis when I turn my head at times and bend my head forward or by looking up even feeling like the ground is sliding under my feet when standing still. Do you have any exercises that would help with that.

    1. chiropractor and Therapist said muscles pulling around neck which causes pressure on nerves around neck due to neck out of alignment.

    2. +D J I would recommend going to formal physical therapy and have someone evaluate you. Since you are getting dizziness with certain movements, I wouldn’t recommend anything without getting to evaluate you. A PT could evaluate you and help you find out what is causing it and how to fix it. Good luck.

  11. Thank you. I will see what I can find that is firmer. I really appreciate your prompt answers!

  12. I have done these twice a day for a couple of days and I am experiencing low back muscle pain. The pain is in a band above my hip from my spine to just in front of my hip. It happens on both sides. I do the exercises on my mattress, which is latex. What can I do to stop the muscle/back pain? Thank you, Joan

  13. I just had a bad episode of vertigo yesterday , I’ve had BPV for some years but yesterday my whole world spun like crazy , I’ve increased my exercise routine of late in a bid to get fit , lots of stairs and hills on our walk and then an ocean pool swim at the 3/4 way home mark , never felt better then bam …vertigo ….could the stairs and eye movement issues be a trigger ?

    1. +suzycaso The stairs might be. It is usually a positional thing, like changing positions from lying to sitting, etc.

  14. Thank you for these exercises. They seem simple and doable at home. Can they also help remove fluid from behind the eardrum? I have vertigo in my left ear and fluid in my right ear. I really want to know how to get rid of the fluid!

    1. +Joan Smith You’re welcome! I don’t think they will get rid of the fluid, but it’s worth a try. Good luck.

  15. Thank you for posting. This is the first time I understood the lying down exercise.

    1. +Asma Kamran It is different for everyone, but it’s important to go to the doctor because vertigo can be the symptom of many things.

  16. I am going to try these exercises. I have had an unexplainable type of motion sickness for a year and a half. It started one week before I stated Chemo for a GIST. I cannot get rid of it. I have approximately 35-40 attacks over a ten minute period. The spells last for about one to two seconds and go away as quickly as they occur. Its not the typical motion sickness that people complain about. Medicines do not help. Its a feeling of: OMG, I am getting dizzy, then it goes away. Accompanied with that is the sensation that you get when you are almost asleep and someone or something startles you.. a kind of rush… Has anyone ever heard of this? I take GLEEVEC for the cancer I have, my oncologist and put me on a chemo vacation for two weeks to see if it will go away. So far, nothing has changed. Thanks.

    1. +androsboy2006 Hopefully these will help. If not, you might want to talk with your doctor about getting a referral for physical therapy. Some PTs specialize in vestibular rehab, and they might be able to help you figure it out. Good luck!

  17. Thank you Dr. Jo. My mother and I discovered through your excessive that it’s her right ear that’s causing vertigo. We followed your exercise, had a laugh and prayed she’ll be made well. I thank the Lord Jesus for the gift of you and this video.

  18. Thank you Dr Jo. It really helped my virtigo. how long do I have to do this. even after this goes away, you need to practice this? I was given Beterserc 16 for this Virtigo. Do I have to continue that too or slowly decrease same? Thanks

    1. +TJ J You’re welcome! It is recommended to do these 2 times a day for at least 2 weeks. You can do them occasionally if you feel like it is coming back on. As for the medicine, you would have to ask your doctor who prescribed it to you. Good luck!

    1. +Rose Merra It is a disruption of the “crystals” in your inner ear that keeps us balanced. Basically they move out of place, and make us feel off balanced, spinning, dizzy, etc. It can be caused by many things, but no, it’s not a disease. Good luck.

    1. +Galina G That part does sound like BPPV, but not the other stuff. Do you have any blood pressure issues, or have you been sick recently?

  19. I have weird pressure sensations in my head and both ears ring with pressure. My environment feels like it is moving ever so slightly even when my head is still. My legs all the way up Buzz episodically with this. Friday I see the doctor. They are only calling it vertigo. But, does this sound like BPPV?

    1. +Galina G That doesn’t really sound like just BPPV to me. Hopefully they can figure it out for you. Good luck!

  20. and also does anyone else have the sound, light sensitivity, and sometimes triggering massive migraines?

    1. I’m having the same issue as you and was just diagnosed with bppv along with the migraines, light and sound sensitivity.

    2. +Natalie Nobert You’re welcome. I hope you find some answers soon and start feeling better.

    3. ty.. they say it is bppv but i also have something else going on…scheduled for an mri and have to go see a neurologist as well..

    4. +Natalie Nobert That doesn’t sound like BPPV. Have you been to a doctor about it? Also, to answer your other question, 2 times a day for about 30 seconds to 1 minute of each. Good luck!

  21. hi jo,thanks for the video,I’ve BPPV of almost a year now,I’ve visited hundreds of doctors who tried all Types of Tablets and all Epley’s to Brandt-Daroff maneuvers, all everybody every doctor & Websites talks about is CAUSES,Symptoms,DIAGNOSIS,Prevention,Types of TREATMENT, and Maneuvers, Nobody takes about cure. I’ve a problem in Posterior semicircular canal, I’ve decided to go to any extent to put an END to this.i cannot live my life like this,Please Suggest me something will surgery help ?

    1. +Irc Durrani Have you tried the somersault technique? I have had several patients say that it helps when it is in different canals. You can do a search for and it probably find it. Good luck.

  22. This is Killing me im so tired of being dizzy . I have done all the exercises it doesn’t go away I’m dizzy every second in like 2 weeks now , I’ve never had problem with this before . My doctor said ” throw ur head left to right ” that was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard . Plz help I can’t do anything anymore … I’m afraid of loosing my balance at any point .

    1. @***** These aren’t specifically for labyrinthitis, but I have had many people tell me it did help them with it.  Good luck!

    2. +AskDoctorJo hell I am also experiencing these things to I was diagnosed with Vertigo and Labyrinthitis any help?

    3. +Aslan Ali Very high or low blood pressure, low blood sugar, a number of different diagnoses. If you don’t feel like your doctor was helping, I would recommend going for a second opinion.

  23. I have ear infections, just had surgery in my right ear, dr put a prostesis titanium in replace of an ear drum….hope that is not causing my problem, but also have sinus pressure, and infection on the other ear! All of these conditions are probably causing the vertigo!

    1. +Maja Ole’ Sounds like it. Not sure if these will help with that, but it is worth a try.

  24. Thank you I hope your advice helps my vertigo!!! Can’t wait to start the exercise!! Thank you, ….:)

  25. this is my life for the last year…. started as vestibular neuritis, took a long time to recover and now I have constant tinnitus and sometimes it comes back though lesser degree. I was scared about menieres but my hearing is fine, so my ENT told me is not menieres. “sigh”

    1. Hi i have the same issue. Just wanted to ask what test do you have done to doagnose if it is vestibular neuritis?

    1. +Aqib Khan It depends on how severe it is, and if it is a true BPPV. On average, anywhere from 3-6 weeks of the exercises.

  26. i have ringing ears, pressure on forehead and dizziness after viral fever from august this year.i am 7 months pregnant

    1. +Ayan Alam That is something you really need to discuss with your OB/GYN.

    1. +Ayan Alam That is really a question for your doctor because it depends on how well you are doing and how far along you are. Good luck!

  27. Hey I was just lying down and I just started to feel slight dizziness. It stopped after about an hour and a half but now I have a headache. Any help?

    1. +kitten 2808 It definitely could be positional vertigo, but vertigo can be the symptom of many things. If it happens again, you should really go see your doctor just in case. Good luck!

    1. +fakinsupa100 I’ve heard the other way around. Bell’s palsy causing vertigo. Sometimes it can also be Ramsey-Hunt syndrome presenting as Bell’s palsy. If you haven’t been to the doctor, you should really go. Good luck.

  28. I just did the first treatment and the exercises did entice the symptoms. So I am hoping that it will work, because I have neck issues and there is not much I can do. Thank you!

  29. Thank you. I was given metronidazole again, and it once again gave me vertigo. This was a big help.
