More Dr. Jo vertigo videos:

Vertigo is the symptom of many different things, and is caused by something else going on. BPPV, which is a positional vertigo, is the most common one you might have.

The first exercise is putting your feet as close together as you can. This is called the Romberg stance. If that is easy, try closing your eyes. If that is easy, move your head from side to side, and then up and down. Then combine them together with head movements and eyes closed. If all those become easy, try standing on an uneven surface like a pillow or a folded up yoga mat.

The next balance exercise is called tandem stance. This is with one foot directly in front of the other like you are standing on a tight rope. You can modify it if that is too hard to start with by putting your back heel and your toes on each foot next to each other. Follow the same progression as above. Make sure to switch your feet.

If all of these become easy, you can try standing on one foot and doing the same progression.

    1. @Sarita Marie yes, actually I figured it out myself. Because of my arm injury I was sleeping in a chair. If you aren’t laying back enough and you relax your muscles you have a different balance and it makes the chair teeter totter.

  16. Dr Jo, I have a problem with dragging my feet (especially the right). I walk with a slight tilt forward and arms in skiing position. Already had two verified diagnosis (GAD) Generalized Anxiety Disorder, that developed intense tension on my neck, traps and shoulders. I went to physical therapy but didn’t help much, can you show me how to ease the tension that’s affecting my walking? Thank you.

    1. Unfortunately, I really don’t know what would be best since I can’t evaluate you. Do you have access to a pool? Aquatic therapy (exercising in the pool, not swimming) can really help with tension.

  17. First to comment, yeah!! Great exercises. They really get those ankle muscles working. I have a bunion on my right foot and that really throws me off balance on that side. Thank you.

  18. Is this more for BPPV or permanent vertigo? I have permanent migraine associated vertigo and I have done some of these with no relief.
